Early Life and Education

Jose Antonio Diaz was born on February 19, 1963, as an only child to his parents in Havana, Cuba. His mother once ran a numbers game operation and a bar.

However, his family moved to the USA and settled in North Bergen, New Jersey. While there, tragically, Joey became an orphan at a young age.

He lost his father when he was three and a few years later, his mother, who was found dead on the floor of their house when he was fifteen. This incident made him move from one home to another making it four families. This was a result of his reckless nature at that time.

For his education, he attended the McKinley School and later studied at the North Bergen High School, where he won awards in the field of performing arts. He graduated in 1982.

In 1985, he decided to move to Colorado and further his education and study economics at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

That was when he was 18 years old. However, he had to quit in the process because he disliked the atmosphere there.

Joey started his career first in comedy in 1988 when he was sent to prison for kidnapping and intensified robbery.

While in prison, he realized his talent for comedy and started performing stand-up comedy for his fellow inmates. He then came across an advertisement for a stand-up comedy course in the ‘Rocky Mountain Post’ and took the comedy course.

He was really then into the business of comedy, he pursued comedy after his release, and so on June 18, 1991, he performed at the Comedy Works in Denver. He later participated in Beck’s Amateur Comedy Competition and won.

Again, He took part in another similar competition held in Seattle, Washington and he came sixth out of forty.

After that, he was motivated to also become an actor. Joey first performed in the film by playing the role of a referee in the sports comedy film ‘BASEketball’. Directed by David Zucker, which was released in 1998. He later took a small role in the TV series ‘NYPD Blue.

He continued showing his talents in his acting career. In 2002, he took a supporting role in the crime comedy film ‘Analyze That’, directed by Harold Ramis. Further, he also took cameo roles in ‘Law & Order (2004), ‘Spider-Man 2’ (2004), and ‘Taxi’ (2004).

In 2005, he played a supporting role as an unlawful union organizer in the sports comedy film ‘The Longest Yard’.

2007 was his appearance in a few episodes of the TV series ‘My Name is Earl’. In 2009, he appeared and played an important role in the film ‘The Dog Who Played Christmas’, and next played a guest role in the TV series ‘The Mentalist’ alongside a small role in the comedy film ‘Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star’.

In 2012, after a long career in comedy, Joey created an autobiographical documentary named ‘Where I Got My Balls From’, complimented with his stand-up special, ‘It’s Either You or the Priest’. This particular creation reached the first position on the Billboard Comedy charts in the UK and Canada, as well as on iTunes.
