As one of Nigeria’s richest lawyers, Festus Keyamo stands out as an activist who never shied from giving his best in every endeavor. His character traits are fundamental in shaping his achievements and contributions to Nigeria. He is known throughout the country for his crusades for justice, human rights, and the fight against corruption.

In his capacity once as one of the private prosecuting counsels for the EFCC, he prosecuted some politicians on behalf of the Commission. He had one time taken the Federal Government of Nigeria to court over illegal appointments of service chiefs.

Early life

He was born on January 21, 1970, Ughelli, Delta State, Nigeria into a large family of nine – seven children and their parents, Pa Matthias Keyamo and Caroline Abeni Keyamo. He is the third child and the first son.

He hails from Uvwie L.G.A, near Warri, in Delta State. Going by his full name, Festus Egwarewa Adeniyi Keyamo, Adeniyi was given to him as a result of the fact that his mother hails from Yewa South L.G.A in Ogun State.


His primary education at Oharisi (Model) Primary School, Ughelli in 1975 which lasted till 1981. That same year, he proceeded to Government college Ughelli for his secondary education which he completed in 1986. He also did his Higher School Certificate (HSC) course there.

In 1988, through JAMB, he gained admission to study Law at Bendel State University, (now Ambrose Alli University (AAU)) Ekpoma, in Edo State. On completion in 1992, he graduated with an LL.B degree (Second Class Upper). He proceeded to law school and was called to the Nigerian Bar in December 1993.

He later progressed to the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in the United Kingdom where he qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK).

Mr Festus Keyamo as an outstanding lawyer was called to the Nigerian Bar on December 15, 1993. This set the stage for a colourful career in law for him.

As a young lawyer, he decided to practice in Gani Fawehinmi Chambers in Lagos but left in 1995 to establish his own law firm, FESTUS Keyamo CHAMBERS with the Head Office at No.1 Festus Keyamo Lane, Anthony Village, Lagos State

Fortunately, his chamber grew rapidly with branches in Abuja and Warri (Delta State), and liaison office in many states with over 23 lawyers and more than 30 para-legal staff.
He is also a politician.

Marriage life

Festus Keyamo was married to Isioma Irene and their union was blessed with a boy and a girl: Nicole Keyamo and Festus Keyamo jnr. Currently, they are separated.


  • Records has it that Festus Keyamo (SAN) has helped many youths of Delta State unjustly arrested and detained by the authorities. He stood in for them free of charge.
  • He was the Director of Strategic Communications, and then appointed the spokesperson for President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 second term campaign and he victoriously led.
  • He has handled controversial cases like the case between Stephanie Otobo, a Canadian-based singer and stripper, and Nigerian televangelist and the senior pastor and general overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International, Apostle Suleman Johnson,in 2017. He is also a lawyer to popular Nigerian musical Duo of Psquare.
  • He earned the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2017.
  • On August 2019, he was appointed as Nigeria’s Minister of State, for Niger Delta. He was later redeployed to Ministry of Labour and Employment.

  • As a law student in 1992 during Taslim Elias Moot Trial Competition, he won the Best Single Advocate of Nigeria Law Students.
  • In 1994 while in legal practice, he won the Best Lawyer, Gani Gawehimi Chambers.
    In 2001, Students Union, University of Jos honoured him with Honorary Alumni, of various Students’ Associations; Activist of the year.
  • Fame brought him into limelight and he was listed in the “New Who is Who in Nigeria (2003)”.
  • Still on his good work, his community conferred him with the chieftaincy title of Ogba-uri of Ogor Kingdom (Strong man of the law) in 2005.
  • It didn’t stop there, they went on to confer him with the chieftaincy title of Omorokaro of Uvwie Kingdom (The child who leads the way) in Delta State in 2011.
  • Furthermore, because of his contributions towards Press freedom, Nigeria Union of Journalists honoured him with Defender of Press Freedom Award in 2018.
  • He had also won the Global Human Rights Award by the United States Global Leadership Council in Washington in 2017.
