Early Life and Education

Going by her full name, Sunlen Mari Serfaty was born on April 6 1981 in Midlothian, Virginia.  Her parents are William N. Miller and Denise M. Miller. Sunlen was born into a family of hard work and ambition, therefore she grew with it.

She is of European descent who grew up in the United States of America.

As she grew up, she watched and learned the importance of hard work and ambition from her mother who juggled domestic affairs and her job as a marketing communications manager for a service unit of a French transport and power equipment company.

This helped to form a growth mindset towards goals and careers. She also chose the path of communication but that of international affairs.

For her college education, she attended the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University and graduated with a B.A. in International Affairs and a concentration in Media and Communication.

Career

Sunlen started her career right in college. She worked for local stations thereby sharpening her skills.

She has widespread experience on-air, writing, and production, with specific expertise in political campaigns and White House reporting.

However, she first landed a job where she served as a local general assignment reporter on the weekends for WLJA, an associate of ABC in Washington D.C.

She covered breaking news stories, as well as feature stories for them in the top ten markets of the Washington, D.C.-metro area.

From May 2003 to September 2004, she also worked as an associate producer of television and radio projects for The Washington Post.

After some time in the job, she took on the role of a reporter for ABC News and worked as a White House and U.S. Senate reporter covering Congress.

For the broadband part of ABC NewsNow, she regularly filed for ABCNews.com, thereby contributing greatly to the network.

Just in the space of two years in the job, her hardwork paid off in 2008, when she was recognized and appointed to join ABC’s crew of reporters who were to report developing stories at the White House.

Her new appointment coincided with President Barack Obama’s entry into the White House. This was a great opportunity and an important part of her career.

She covered President Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign which was featured on the ABC News overnight show World News Now, as well as on their news website.

Through this, she made a mark at the network and more opportunities came and she served on a variety of its platforms including This Week with George Stephanopoulos, World News with Charles Gibson, and Politics Live.

CNN could not resist her experience in reporting political campaigns and Whitehouse and the came for her to work with CNN Newsource in their Washington Bureau.

Sunlen accepted their offer. She contributed news coverage for its more than 800 affiliates.

Later, she joined the general assignment team for CNN in Washington covering Washington at large.

She has under her portfolio a broad diversity of national news, breaking news, and Washington politics.

CNN Sunlen previously worked as a congressional correspondent covering Capitol Hill for the network. She has also reported on one of the most hotly contested presidential elections in U.S history in 2016.

Marriage

She got married to Alexis Leigh Serfaty, a policy adviser in Washington for the Department of Transportation on August 3, 2013, at Rose Park, Washington D.C.

Their union was first through the introduction by a mutual friend that led to regular communication and finally to their first date at Firefly in Dupont.

Then gradually, one date led to another which lasted for a long time before they finally agreed to the marriage. They had their daughter in 2017.
